Oh, Gibson, you’ve started something now!

Presenting Debut

Introducing a band to the stage is something I’ve never done before. But Gibby, our very own Gibson Freedman of the Teatime show, asked me to join in and have a go at presenting a band or two. He has so many years of radio and music related experience I was delighted (felt quite honoured) when he smiled, handed me a microphone, and said, ‘Go on, you’ll be alright’.

Kiwi and LEFT

Two bands that I have been really looking forward to seeing were listed on the bill at School Aid. I was only able to attend on the Saturday, so luck was on my side, as both were on the bill that day at The Bobbin in Lancaster.

LEFT were on stage first and Gibby encouraged me to try introducing them. It felt like a speedy moment in time, quite a blur, and gone in a flash. I have a vague memory of saying something like, ‘if you’re ready for some punk noisy, this is LEFT’.

This band blew me away. It felt as though they were determined to flex and fill up the space around them with their sound and performance. The frontman put on an incredible show: throwing his microphone and strutting around the floor space in front of the stage. His shouting and growling of lyrics and spoken word, his grabbing the attention of unsuspecting audience members with his wanderings around the bar area, and the unexpected chair-top performance, were an exciting mix of terrifying shouts and softer moments of stillness. Superb entertainment. And if you like that sort of thing, it was very punk.

Kiwi are a wonderful new band from Morecambe. Lyrically very catchy and relatable, musically rocky yet melodic and tuneful. Indie pop-rock is how I described them as I introduced them to the stage as the headline act. I spoke to the singer, Tom Taylor, just before they went on stage and he told me that there are two more singles almost ready for release. If they are half as good as their debut, Codeine, they will be hits. That did seem to be their most popular and well-known song on this occasion. The audience crowded to the front of the stage and sang along with the band.

‘Don’t waste the night, call me up and you might, just save me in time.’

Kiwi certainly did make the most of the night and their live performance was very good, very entertaining, and one that I’m sure secured their name as ‘ones to watch’ in the local scene (and probably beyond).

The Radio and The World

Introducing a band on the stage at a live event – it’s not like presenting a radio show at all. I remember how nervous I was recording my very first show. Alone in the studio I pre-recorded my voice links and added music to my playlist on the Myriad software system. I tried not to think about who would be listening, as I am actually quite a shy person at heart. I have overcome my nerves over the years using different techniques, but nothing really prepares you for your first radio show.

When I’m in the studio I pretend that no one is listening. Of course, that’s far from true and there are thousands of people who voted for my monthly new music show. Apparently, we now have a geographic coverage of around 380,000 adults on DAB. The added possibilities of listeners online and with the mobile phone apps is absolutely mind blowing. To be voted in the Top 5 Favourite Shows in the 2021 Listener Awards was really quite something, and humbling. In a busy world of people and technology vying for everyone’s attention, people all over the world tune in to Beyond Radio. To my listeners and featured artist/bands in the UK, South Africa, USA, Germany, Ireland and wherever else (you know who you are), thank you so much for your support.

I’m back in the studio now. I still don’t know what most of them do, but I’m learning. I can produce a radio show though, so I’ve made great progress in the right direction.

Interviews

My monthly spoken word show, Spotlight, is going to be merged with the new music show from March 2022. After a few social media direct messages we chatted on the phone. Jay spoke about the developments that have led to the two venue and two day event that we now have. Jay works closely with Mark ‘Simmy’ Simpson, that other well known muso from the Lancaster and Morecambe area. I spoke to ‘Simmy’ in a Zoom interview recently, so I can add some highlights of those conversations to my radio shows, too. Together, Jay and Simmy have planned to stage around 30 acts, bands and solo artists, some in Lancaster at The Bobbin and some at The Exchange in Morecambe.

For the benefit of local schools, there will be raffle prizes which have been donated, and other fundraising on the day. He spoke with pride about their development of the set they play, one that has been honed and crafted over the years. I wasn’t sure what I was in for to be honest but the acoustic duo ‘Black Liver’ are a fabulously funny comedy duo. Singing and performing some of their own songs, interspersed with anecdotes and chat in a ‘scratch’ performance, the pair lamented the cuts in arts funding, were brutally honest about how they felt about library provisions, and sang about how they feel about their friend's kids. This blog is of course part of my 'side hustle'. Anyone familiar with recent Ted Talks or academic theory concerned with the world of work will be familiar with that phrase. It is the term for an aspirational side-line: a passion project intended as a platform for creativity, that has the potential to help develop skills and generate additional income. In my case, the work I do at the radio station is part of my change of career. What this does mean for me is that I can concentrate on my love of music, develop my skills, and be more creative in the ways that make me happy. I am part of the radio station family though, and I do like to contribute or at least keep up with the news. That's where the mobile phone app comes in very handy.

Do you have the mobile phone app, yet? It's really useful. Listening live to the broadcasts or checking the local weather, following Morecambe FC commentary or listening to the latest podcast (Shrimps Verdict), viewing the schedule and listening again to your favourite shows - you can do so much with the app, and it's available for Android and iPhones. I recently installed it onto my new mobile phone because honestly, I really do enjoy all of what's on there - not least our very local news.

We do have in-house news content from our very own local journalist (announcements to follow, no doubt). The news items are listed in an easy to navigate menu, and many aspects of the Lancaster, Morecambe and surrounding area are covered. Want to know about the Tree Warden Scheme? Check the app. What about bus times over the Christmas period, or a snippet about Eden Project North? Check the app. Loud in Libraries, Covid advice, Lancaster District Street Aid ... ? You know what to do.

But by far and away the best use of the app for me, is to listen live. Our schedule has many different shows - specialist music shows such as Indie Rock Heaven with Tim Fernandez (Saturdays at 6pm) or The Folk & Acoustic Show with Chris Denerley (Wednesdays at 7pm), are a screen tap away. Do you like a spoken word led show with a mix of chat and music? We have those, too. Try the Radio Theatre Show (Mondays at 10pm) or The Fishy & Foggy Show (Tuesdays at 9pm).

The app is very easy to use and makes the shows so accessible, even on the move. It's a marvellous addition to our media, and works well alongside the radio station's other outlets - we have a social media presence. Have you seen the Beyond Radio coverage of the New Year's Day Dippers on Facebook yet?

Greg Lambert, you probably know him as our Tuesday night presenter 'The Resident', represented the radio station on New Year's Day morning. Braving the cold weather, microphone in hand, proudly wearing the station colours (a rather fetching purple jacket - logo and all), Greg provided Facebook Live film footage. There are a few short videos on the Beyond Radio Facebook page, see photos of the characters who dressed up for the occasion, but also check out this short film from Greg - see the New Year's Day Dippers and the crowds that gathered to spur them on.

Looking back through my Beyond Radio notebook, I found the details of a really enjoyable weekend. 'This,' I thought as I read through the dog eared and well thumbed pages of my beloved A4 hardback silver notebook, 'this is what I want to do more of.' I had found longhand scribbles about my November Spotlight show interviewee Clint Boon being at Kanteena (I was told I would be on the guest list for the event); a new band called Redeemers looked and sounded quite good in their Instagram post so I'd made a note to check them out on the Friday night; I had a diary appointment with one of the management team from The Pub, because I was going to interview him for my Spotlight show; and I met Roger Moorhouse (of The Cosmic American Music Show) for the first time and he was very friendly; and I had made a note about The Platform: 'Don't forget the arts fair on Sunday.' I have posted about all of these things, in one way or another, on my social media and make no apologies for the gushing enthusiasm with which I name-drop and liberally sprinkle my posts with #hashtags - it's all part of the fun.

I did enjoy myself on New Year's Day, not as a brave Morecambe Bay Dipper (maybe next year), but when I posted music clips and comments on my Instagram account. Mentally ticking off the best musical finds of the later part of 2021, listening again to key moments and songs that made my ears prick up on first hearing them, and checking my diary for past gig details, I collated trios of bands by genre and uploaded the short reels to my Instagram account. Rather than a round up or 'wipe' of the year, I posted about things that excite me and that I will be following up in the coming year. 'Ones to watch' feature quite heavily in my usual posts, as does the phrase, 'a band I want to see live and loud.' Planning ahead and purchasing gig tickets, worrying about the logistics of actual attendance closer to the dates, and checking the tour dates of local bands - in 2022 you can expect more of the same from this music fan.

This year my love of music has been taken to a new level - presenting two shows on Beyond Radio. I never dreamed of or aspired to presenting on the radio. I could never have imagined broadcasting to potentially hundreds of thousands of people, listening ears eager to hear my musical choices, listeners who are as in love with music as I am. With a geographic broadcast reach of around 380 000 adults since the DAB expansion, and with the potential for countless more listeners online, I quite honestly can't believe that I'm so lucky to do what I do - presenting two shows. I was asked recently how I overcome any nerves - I imagine that I'm the only one in the room, I replied, and I talk as if nobody is listening. It came as a massive surprise to hear that my show The New Music Brief was voted in the Top 5 shows by our listeners - and I was given a Beyond Radio Award by the Board of Directors. Evidently, new music, in all its styles and genres, is something that people want to hear about. Getting messages from bands in Germany, such as Future Radio, thanking me for playing their records, featured artists like The Clifftones in America commenting on my social media telling me they enjoyed the show, and knowing that my new music show was voted for by so many listeners (who might well be listening all around the world), well it's just overwhelming. I can't thank people enough for their support - thank you, again.

And as I look at my audio files, determined to finally get around to editing the interview I did with William Tucker of The Ruby Tuesdays; knowing that the songs I have listed in my notebook need to be uploaded to the Myriad Playout system that we use for radio broadcasts; and checking my Instagram Direct Messages for a reply from Baz of Massive Wagons (a zoom interview booking for the Spotlight interview), I know exactly where my blogging fits in with the Beyond Radio family: it's an extension of me. This blog might offer some inspiration and encouragement to others - these blogs and this station is for you, whoever you are and wherever you might be reading this. This is part of my side hustle but it's also a unique insight into the passion that drives each and every one of the people who make up the station, people just like you and me, people who work with real local radio - Beyond Radio.

Julie Stacey lives in Morecambe. Obviously in his element, Nathan was revealing some exciting news about business partnerships and possible broadcasting opportunities connected to our local festivals. He was in a conversation with Greg Lambert, our local sports, news and entertainments programme presenter. Greg nodded enthusiastically as he listened before posing questions about the time scales and other agencies involved. Stopping momentarily to listen to their conversation (when I overheard a snippet of good gossip about DAB expansion) I quickly remembered that I was running out of time and that I had some urgent work to do in Studio 2 – the gossip was something I would catch up on later that afternoon.

I had to make changes to my Spotlight show, and I had to act quickly. Clint Boon had been an absolute delight to interview, and the audio clips that I had selected from the full Zoom meeting had already been uploaded to the Myriad Playout broadcast system that we use. Clint was due to DJ at a local Manchester music event at Kanteena. I had interviewed him as a music scene celebrity of interest, formerly the keyboard player of Inspiral Carpets, who was visiting the local area. All I had to do was edit the voice links between interview clips and the songs that would be a part of my Spotlight show. It was a bolt out of the blue when I received a message from the event’s organiser, on the afternoon before broadcast: the band playing at the event had been changed - I had to completely overhaul my show.

An urgent task was to remove some sections of the interview in which Clint and I had focused on the tribute band he was supposed to work with at the event. As The Courtbetweeners (a Courteeners tribute band) was no longer part of the line-up I had to make decisions about other Manchester bands that were mentioned in our full interview. I listened to the Zoom meeting audio a number of times, making notes as I did, and decided to shifted the focus of our interview to highlight Clint’s own development, as part of the most successful line up of the Inspiral Carpets, and his personal diversification as a music professional in a post Inspiral Carpets world. Having struggled to edit the audio using one particular software package, I did manage to extract some audio for use in the show. The next step was to change the radio log, in which I had previously loaded my songs playlist.

I know the Manchester music scene fairly well, Clint and our generation have that shared musical soundtrack to our formative years, and I was confident that I could find suitable alternative tracks to play. It would take some time but it was not a difficult task.

Luckily for me, Clint Boon is a household name synonymous with the Inspiral Carpets and other ‘Madchester’ bands such as James and The Happy Mondays, so I selected a few crowd pleasers and floor fillers from their back catalogues. Some new voice links were also needed, so I quickly recorded those. A shuffle of the playing order of some advertisements and jingles completed my tasks for the day, and as per schedule, the Spotlight radio show was eventually saved and was ready to broadcast.

Our Commercial Director, Nathan Hill, is a font of knowledge about all things related to the running of a local FM radio station, and was on hand to help with some technical issues. Being able to edit and cut out undesirable elements in audio is as prized a skill as enhancing sound quality. From creating jingles to seamlessly fading the voice links and segue edits, his experience is demonstrated, and his lightning-fast mouse clicks show impressive hand and eye co-ordination. I still need to work on my Audition software package editing skills, but I’ll get there. He has come to my rescue a number of times already, but it’s always with a smile, because he knows it’s all part of my learning journey.

As a presenter he is also the master of his own radio show which broadcasts on a Saturday (tune in to The Afternoon Show to hear fun chat and the occasional story about Producer Dave) but he is also a great team player and radio-business ‘Jack of all Trades’. He did have a career in the education sector for a number of years and worked with IT, so after checking in on me a few of times during the afternoon, he gave my laptop a very quick service. Deleting unused apps and offering a quick software tutorial, he reminded me that we had discussed my writing for the Beyond Radio blog – he said he’d be in touch when the website changes had been made. A radio station blog, it had been decided, is a great way to give an insight to life in our local radio station, and also to add extra information and interest about the local music scene - something that I’m passionate about. I needed to speak to Greg Lambert before I started writing.

You might know Greg Lambert as The Resident on Beyond Radio because he presents the local news, sports and entertainments show every Tuesday evening. His regular guests include Detective Sergeant Aide Knowles – the well respected officer #YorkshireDibble (also responsible for the social media hashtag #inyapop). But did you know that as well as interviewing and presenting for Beyond Radio, Greg also has a career history in journalism and has been the content editor for a number of notable local newspapers, including Morecambe’s own ‘The Visitor’? What better endorsement for my Beyond Blogger project than words of support, advice and encouragement from our very own resident editor.

After skim reading some of my social media pages and flicking through my online blog posts, Greg smiled and suggested a weekly or fortnightly blog. He asked about my writing approach, and the content I would like to produce, before saying he was quite happy with my use of personal voice and personal experience - he agreed that the project could be a real success. As a former teacher and current MA Creative Writing student, I am delighted to be able to bring something of my experience and area of expertise to the radio station team. That afternoon, talking to some of the team and learning about developments for Beyond Radio in the local business community, I felt so excited for the future of the station and my part in it. Greg and Nathan waved goodbye, smiling and confirming contact details to further our plans, and I logged off for the day. But I did pick up my note book and I wrote the title of my first blog post. In that moment, The Beyond Blogger was born.

We have much to shout about at Beyond Radio. We take pride in being ‘real local radio’ and will always focus on issues and events in Lancaster, Morecambe, Carnforth and the surrounding areas, but we can now also reach a potential audience of around 370,000 adults through digital radio. How marvellous that our community is expanding to not only cover North Lancashire but also South Cumbria. Listeners will be able to tune in to the DAB broadcast for clear and uninterrupted radio play while living and travelling in the area – for many of our listeners, that means no more annoying re-tunes needed on those workday commutes.
