What is Beyond Radio?

Beyond Radio is a community radio station based in Lancaster and is the only local FM radio station broadcasting for the Lancaster and Morecambe Bay area.

When did Beyond Radio launch?

Beyond Radio was founded in 2012 and began broadcasting on FM in 2016 after a period of broadcasting solely online.

Who founded Beyond Radio?

Beyond Radio was founded by a team of individuals who each held an interest in radio, the local community, and held many years of experience in the community radio sector. 

Where is Beyond Radio based?

Beyond Radio is based at our studios, located in the Old Bowling Pavilion, Palatine Park, 45A Chester Place, Lancaster, LA1 4HA.

How can I listen to Beyond Radio?

Beyond Radio is available on 103.5FM and 107.5FM in the Lancaster and Morecambe Bay area, and on our website beyond.radio (where you can also LISTEN AGAIN to past programmes). You can also listen by downloading the Beyond Radio app or through your smart speaker.

What geographical area does Beyond Radio cover?

Beyond Radio primarily covers the Lancaster and Morecambe District – namely Lancaster, Morecambe, Carnforth and the surrounding villages in the area served by Lancaster City Council. We can also be heard into the Garstang and North Preston area, and into the South Lakes.

I was able to listen to Beyond Radio on DAB+ but I can’t any more. Why not?

Beyond Radio was available on DAB+ from 2021 to 2024. We made the decision to remove ourselves from DAB+ for various operational reasons. Our aim is to return to DAB+ in future.

What is a community radio station?

Ofcom, the communications regulator, defines a community radio station as one “fuelled by the hard work and enthusiasm of volunteers, reflecting a diverse mix of cultures and interests, and providing a rich mix of mostly locally-produced radio content. They typically cover a small geographical area with a coverage radius of up to 5km, and are run on a not-for-profit basis. They can also bring community benefits such as training and community news and discussion.”

What is Beyond Radio’s relationship to The Bay?

We are often asked what our connection is to The Bay – a popular commercial radio station operating in the Lancaster and Morecambe Bay area from 1993 to 2018. We are also sometimes mistaken for The Bay, which we take as a huge compliment! But in reality, Beyond Radio is a completely separate and different organisation to The Bay.

Who owns Beyond Radio?

Beyond Radio is owned by Proper Community Media trading as Beyond Radio Ltd, run by a board of directors. The day-to-day operation of the radio station is overseen by a separate management group made up of Beyond Radio volunteers. The vast majority of Beyond Radio’s directors, management team and volunteers are based in the Lancaster and Morecambe Bay area.

What is Central Radio North West’s relationship to Beyond Radio?

Central Radio North West is a separately-owned and run commercial radio station for Lancashire. Beyond Radio and Central Radio North West have a working partnership.
