There will be no changes made to Blue Badge parking arrangements in the Lancaster district, the city council has confirmed.
Lancaster City Council will retain free and unrestricted parking for Blue Badge holders in its pay and display car parks following an overwhelming response to a recent consultation, in which three quarters of people said they want the current arrangements to remain unchanged.
1,870 people responded to the survey in total, and the decision means that Blue Badge holders can continue to park free of charge and without a time limit in all of the city council’s pay and display car parks.
Councillor Abi Mills, Lancaster City Council’s Disability Champion, said: “I am so relieved that our disabled residents have been heard loud and clear, and that the free parking will remain for blue badge holders.
‘’This will be a huge relief to a large number of people, and I thank those involved in the consultation for listening to our communities”.
Councillor Peter Jackson, cabinet member with responsibility for Lancaster regeneration, said: “The response to the consultation has been overwhelming and we’ve heard very clearly that people value the existing arrangements, which are more generous than those offered in neighbouring districts, and want them to remain.”
The consultation was due to last four weeks, starting on Monday October 12 and finishing on Monday November 9, but has been ended early.
A number of options had been put forward, including continued unrestricted and free Blue Badge parking in council pay and display car park, changing to three hours' free parking for Blue Badge holders, with normal parking charges applying thereafter, holders paying normal parking charges but receive one extra hour of parking free of charge, or the complete removal of the parking concession scheme.
