Former MP David Morris officially selected as Conservative candidate for Morecambe and Lunesdale

David Morris will stand in Morecambe & Lunesdale in the next general election

The former Morecambe & Lunesdale MP has been officially selected to stand again for the Conservatives in the next general election.

David Morris said he aims to return to office to "finish what he started" during 14 years as MP after he was chosen as the Tories' Parliamentary candidate.

Mr Morris also said he'd launched a "focused rescue plan to halt local decline and reverse two years of stagnation under Labour and Reform".

The former MP, who lives in Heysham, was first elected in 2010 when he defeated Labour's Geraldine Smith in that year's general election.

Mr Morris was re-elected in three successive elections in 2015, 2017 and 2019, before losing his seat to Lizzi Collinge of Labour in 2024.

Since the last election, he has served as leader of the UK Delegation and Vice President of the Council of Europe, and his work in Ukraine has earned him the Medal of Europe and an Honorary Life Membership.

Mr Morris said his plan included to "rescue Eden Morecambe", saying he "will fight to restore the original grand vision after Labour cut the Levelling Up funding, pushing it onto the council, delaying the project by years, and a vastly scaled-back plan".

The MP was in office when the Conservative government originally announced £50m funding towards the Eden Project Morecambe scheme, in 2023.

Work has begun on the new £100m attraction on Morecambe Promenade, which is due to open in 2028.

Mr Morris also said he would ensure a new hospital for the area is built, criticising Labour for "stalling the project" and said "the area has since seen the permanent closure of vital hospital wards at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI)".

Mr Morris also criticised Reform UK, who lead Lancashire County Council, saying under them "the roads make us the pothole capital of Lancashire".

He said Conservatives will invest in a nationwide fleet of resurfacing machines built by British company JCB to "ensure we get our roads sorted".

Mr Morris also said he would "capitalise on Heysham Port’s strategic position to establish closer trading links with the Isle of Man, our closest trading partner, boosting our local commerce" and said he would "secure nuclear jobs" by delivering Heysham 3 power station.

He said: “We were promised change by Labour, and it’s been a change for the worse.

"I live in Heysham, and we’ve gone back 20 years in just two.

"Every demographic in our society has been negatively affected by this Labour 'change', and it needs a proven champion to protect pensioners' business and jobs.

"I delivered the big visions and projects, from the Bay Gateway to Eden, bringing local unemployment to its lowest levels in decades. I have a proven track record.

"When I was the MP, I exposed Andy Burnham’s NHS failures in the last Labour government. I helped sort out our local NHS trust.

"I know how to get things done. I am returning to stop the endless inept excuses, get us back on track, and finish what I started.”

The next UK general election is expected to take place by August 2029.
