Morecambe FC says pension issue now resolved as embargo talks continue

Morecambe FC has announced that pension fund issues that led to the National League placing a transfer embargo on the club have been resolved.

In a statement, the club said they were "pleased to inform its supporters, staff and other stakeholders that all outstanding matters relating to the club’s recently documented pension fund issues have now been resolved".

"This includes the recalculation, filing and payment in full of all overdue contribution schedules to the club’s pension fund with (pension provider) Nest," it said.

Morecambe Football Club Ltd was reported to the Pensions Regulator earlier this month over non-payment of employee pension contributions.

Steve Dewsnip, COO of the Shrimps, confirmed last week that the embargo had been placed by the league due to the pensions issue.

The embargo, which was imposed on August 11, prevents the club from signing a new player or changing the terms of an existing loan, except where the terms of the embargo allow.

"Following the conclusion of this process yesterday, the club has been in discussions with Nest, The Pensions Regulator and the National League, some of which remain ongoing," the statement continues.

"We are hopeful that the National League’s player registration embargo will be removed soon and will provide a further update when appropriate.

"The club would like to thank supporters for their continued patience and support throughout this challenging period.

"We look forward to welcoming you to the Halo Aerospace Stadium this (Friday) evening as (manager) Adam Lakeland and his players take on AFC Telford United, with kick-off at 19:45."

Mr Dewsnip, in an interview with club channels, said last Friday that "a huge amount of work has taken place" to try to resolve the situation.

He said it was caused by "a missed contribution schedule that didn't get filed at the time, a purely administrative matter" following a change in club pension administration earlier this year.
