Storm boards on Morecambe Prom ahead of "exceptionally high tides" and strong winds

Storm boards are in place on Morecambe Promenade as the District prepares for a predicted peak high tide of 5.01m combined with strong winds.

Storms Austen and Boelo are hitting the UK this weekend with a yellow weather warning in place in the Lancaster and Morecambe area from 6pm on Saturday to 9pm on Sunday.

The Met Office said strong westerly winds will spread across northern parts of the UK during Saturday evening. Very windy conditions will persist overnight and through much of Sunday before gradually easing from the southwest later.

Gusts of 55-65 mph are likely widely with some coastal or exposed areas potentially seeing gusts of 70-80 mph or more.

Heavy rain and strong winds began in the Lancaster and Morecambe area on Friday.

"You may have seen our team putting the storm boards in along Morecambe Promenade today as a precaution ahead of exceptionally high tides and strong winds forecast from Sunday 25th to Thursday 29th October," said a Lancaster City Council spokesperson.

"We're expecting a peak high tide of 5.01m, combined with strong south-westerly winds linked to Storm Austen and Storm Boelo, which could increase the risk of sea spray, waves overtopping the promenade, and localised coastal flooding.

"The storm boards help protect the seafront by preventing water, sand and shingle from being washed onto the road and promenade during severe weather conditions.

"We will continue to monitor the forecasts but it is likely that the flood boards will remain in place for the high tides on Monday and Tuesday.

"If you're visiting the Promenade over the coming days, please take extra care and keep away from large waves and exposed coastal areas during periods of high winds.

"Should you find a fallen or dangerous tree is blocking a public road or pavement, please contact Lancashire County Council on 0300 123 6780 or report it via the county council's online Report It service HERE.

"Our tree gang and cleansing teams are on standby should they be required over the weekend."

On Friday, Storm Austen was causing widespread power cuts and travel disruption in other parts of the UK, and wind gusts of 84 mph were recorded at Jersey Airport.

More than 18,000 homes in England and Wales were without power and in Brighton, a section of the iconic West Pier collapsed.
