Lancaster City back to winning ways in Northern Premier League after Whitby win

It was a return to winning ways for Lancaster City against Whitby Town in the Northern Premier League Premier Division on Tuesday night.

After the nature of the 5-1 defeat at Cleethorpes in the FA Trophy last Saturday, Jimmy Marshall was looking for a response and it was the Dollies who started brightest, Charlie Bailey cutting inside from the left just two minutes in, pulling his shot wide.

Dom Lawson would make the keeper work on seven minutes following good work on the left by Yawson and Nathan Caine had a half volley off a Sam Bailey throw in.

Whitby rarely threatened in the opening exchanges, Stan Hewitt's effort from range was the best chance of the game so far on 16 minutes, but seven minutes later they were in front.

Steven Yawson was dispossessed of the ball on the edge of the Whitby box by Callum Hickman and Joey Phuthi was played in down the right with his cross turned into goal at the back post by Stuart Rose.

The hosts were ahead for just four minutes. A Sam Bailey corner was headed down by Brad Moonan and Jim Craig was on hand to fire home his third of the season to bring the scores level.

Chances came for both sides, with Brad Kelly being the busier of the two goalkeepers, preventing Phuthi retaking the lead for Whitby with a smart save.

In the second half Lancaster City kicked on and put the hosts under pressure. Sam Bailey with a free kick just over the bar on 47 minutes, but it would be his brother to give us the lead.

Joe Amison switched the play from right to left find Charlie Bailey, who cut inside similar to the first half but made no mistake with the finish, a curling effort into the bottom left corner.

Bailey was going for more, and there was almost a carbon copy of his goal two minutes later, but this time it went just over the bar.

The last big chance came on 78 minutes, with substitute James Bailey marauding down the left hand side. His dink over the keeper just stayed out, with Nathan Caine not able to poke it home.

Next up is a home game, against Ilkeston Town at the Giant Axe on Saturday.
