Late goals earn Lancaster City all three points at Whitby

Lancaster City scored three times in the last eleven minutes to beat Whitby in the Northern Premier League Premier Division.

It was Charlie Bailey with the first effort on five minutes, after some great play by Lewis Mansell to get the ball into a space in the box for Bailey to shoot, but his chance went over the bar.

Just five minutes later Toby Oliver cleared the ball from the back, which was flicked on by Evangelinos into the path of Jim Craig and under pressure from a Whitby Town defender, he put his effort wide.

The game did settle down but it was Lancaster City with the chances, Mansell and Charlie Bailey working the ball to Bobby Bjork whose effort from the left hand side of the box was saved by Shane Bland.

The best chance of the half came on 40 minutes. Sam Bailey with the perfect through ball to Nic Evangelinos and his first time shot was expertly saved by Bland.

City were to be punished for not taking the lead, as from a Whitby Town free kick, the ball was cleared only to Jarrett Rivers and the midfielder put the ball into the top corner from 25 yards out and the Dolly Blues went in behind at the break.

The second half started with a red card - Bobby Bjork getting his marching orders on 53 minutes for a late challenge from Aaron Haswell.

Changes made on the hour mark were made to go win the game and a free kick from Sam Bailey found Toby Oliver at the back post but his header was over the bar.

Further changes were made by Jimmy Marshall on 70 minutes but it would take a massive let off from the hosts, with Matthew Tymon missing from close range twice.

The change in personnel and tactics worked. Substitute Lawson set up fellow entrant Dylan Moonan, with his effort going over the bar. Evangelinos then tried his luck when Shane Bland came out for a long ball - with the chance flashing wide of the goal.

The equaliser came on 79 minutes with the substitutes linking up to score. Nathan Caine jumping on a loose ball by Bland, driving down the left hand side, finding Lawson inside the box who laid the ball off to Dylan Thompson who placed the ball into the bottom corner with precision.

A minute later the Dolly Blues were ahead. Dylan Moonan won the ball on the halfway line, looking for a striker in the box the ball landed at the feet of Sam Collins and his failed clearance rebounded off the back of Alex Nelson and looped over Shane Bland.

After sustaining Whitby Town pressure, it was Nic Evangelinos who put the game to bed with his 14th goal of the season late on to leave the Dolly Blues two points off the play-off places.
