A header from Paul Lewis secured back-to-back victories for Morecambe as Adam Lakeland’s side claimed a 1-0 win away at Chester in National League North.

Paul Lewis struck seven minutes after the restart at the Deva Stadium, with Morecambe producing a disciplined display to become the first side to defeat Chester in the Enterprise National League North this season.

Lakeland named an unchanged starting XI following Friday night’s 2-1 victory over AFC Telford United, with Myles Boney continuing in goal behind a back four of Ben Williams, Liam Hogan, captain Will Smith and Lewis Baines. Teddy Collis also retained his place after his brace against Telford.

The hosts came into the Bank Holiday encounter unbeaten in their opening five league fixtures, having taken 13 points from a possible 15, but the Shrimps stood firm throughout a competitive opening period.

Neither side could find a breakthrough before the interval as the contest remained goalless at half-time.

Morecambe made the perfect start to the second period and broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute through Paul Lewis.

The midfielder found the decisive goal to put the Shrimps ahead after a pin-point Jake Cain free-kick found him at the front post and gave the travelling support something to celebrate.

Chester responded by turning to their bench, with Billy Waters and Dan Ward introduced shortly after the hour before Isaac Burgess and Kofi Moore followed later in the half as the hosts searched for an equaliser.

Morecambe continued to show resilience as the game entered its closing stages, with Lakeland introducing Isaac Buckley-Ricketts in place of Joe Garner after 77 minutes.

The visitors successfully negotiated the closing stages to secure all three points and a first league clean sheet of the campaign.

It completes an excellent Bank Holiday weekend for Lakeland’s side, with Friday’s victory over Telford followed by another three points on the road against a Chester side who had been unbeaten heading into the afternoon.
