MATCH REPORT: Morecambe 0 South Shields 1

Morecambe fell to a suckerpunch defeat by South Shields thanks to an 88th minute winner in a game the Shrimps had much the better of.

Adam Lakeland is still searching for his first win as manager after this frustrating result under the lights at the Halo Aerospace Stadium on Tuesday.

But he can take a lot of positives from the way his team forced the issue against tough opposition, particularly in the second-half, with a lack of quality in front of goal once again being their undoing.

The first-half lacked clear-cut chances, as South Shields kept the ball and pressed forward, but Morecambe were well-organised and difficult to break down.

The Shrimps lost Lewis Leigh to injury after 15 minutes, replaced by Jake Cain.

A flurry of activity near the South Shields goal towards the end of the first-half boded well for Morecambe, as they took the game by the scruff of the neck in the second 45 minutes.

Buckley-Ricketts and Smith both headed wide, before Buckley-Ricketts missed the best chance of the game, turning wide from Smith's cross.

South Shields, with a rare clear-cut chance, then scored after a short corner routine was worked back into the box and tapped home by Cedwyn Scott, much to the delight of the travelling fans.

Morecambe piled on the pressure late on, in search of an equaliser, but Smith's header drifted agonisingly wide of the far post from Newby's cross.

The Shrimps now travel to Radcliffe on Saturday afternoon.
