Morecambe boxer Nelson Birchall wins Commonwealth Silver title in first bout at super featherweight

Morecambe boxer Nelson Birchall won the Commonwealth Silver Super Featherweight title after a third round stoppage over Lewis Morris.

‘The Sexy One’, who has won all 12 fights so far in his professional career, was competing in his first bout at super featherweight, following becoming the English and Commonwealth silver featherweight champion earlier this year.

An impressive display saw 21-year-old Birchall victorious in the Queensberry event at the BP Pulse Live Arena in Birmingham on Saturday.

After a competitive opening round, Birchall stepped it up, hurting Morris at the end of the second, leaving him looking unsteady as he went back to his corner.

The end came midway through round three with a heavy right hand putting Morris to the canvas, and despite bravely getting to his feet, referee John Latham called a halt to the action.

Birchall, who is in the stable of legendary fight promoter Frank Warren, said after the contest: ‘’I fight because I want to be a world champion and I want to make my family proud.

‘’All the hours when my mum and dad were driving me back and forth to the gym in Blackpool, twice a day, when I was 14 and 15 years old. That’s what makes me driven, and that’s what makes me want to be a champion.

‘’I don’t ever want to let them down, and I don’t want to let down that young kid either.’’

The boxer said he was now preparing for his next event – tying the know with his long term partner, Viktoria.

‘’I get married to my beautiful girlfriend in six weeks, so I’m looking forward to that now, settling myself down and being a husband I suppose,’’ he added.
