John McGuinness MBE celebrated his first start at his 30th anniversary TT races with a fifth place finish.

'The Morecambe Missile' roared home in Sunday's RST Superbike race to a huge reception from motorsport fans, after proving once again he remains competitive around the iconic roads of the Isle of Man three decades on from his first start in 1996.

Dean Harrison claimed victory, McGuinness' Honda Racing team-mate leading from start to finish, with Peter Hickman (Monster Energy BMW Motorrad by 8TEN Racing) in second place 15.5 seconds behind, and Michael Dunlop (MD Racing Honda) third.

McGuinness, 54, clocked a lap of 131.185mph, coming close to his fastest ever lap around the course.

The official Isle of Man TT Races X account tweeted photos of 'McPint' to mark the occasion, as he led off the riders running a special livery to mark 30 years since his first ride around the island roads.

"One incredible journey," said the tweet.

"Arriving in 1996 with a dream to become one of the greatest names in TT history - John McGuinness celebrates where it all began with a special tribute livery.

"A legacy built on passion, perseverance and the Mountain Course."

McGuinness, speaking to TT+ after the race, said: “The icing on the cake would have been the podium, but the three, four in front of me are the best road racers on the planet and they are hard to beat.

“But when they unveiled the bike, I’m not going to lie, it cracked me up a bit, I got a bit emotional, because it just took me back 30 years looking at my 250s that Paul Bird provided for me.

“It was quite emotional to start with, but I was determined at the start, get stuck in, I didn’t want Nathan [Harrison] to catch me.

“I just put six strong laps together, a couple of pit stops.

“But I kept him honest all the way. A top five in a Superbike TT is pretty good.

"What was really humbling for me was the fans, all the way around the last lap.

“I hope I did it justice. I’ve got the original leathers on, the bike with the green number plates on; I just thought that was really cool.

“I just want to thank everybody for the support all these years, and that last lap was quite emotional. I just needed to get it to the finish. Top fives, it’s where I am. But it’s honest results."

Explaining the special livery, Honda Racing UK said:

"When the 24-year-old bricklayer from Morecambe arrived on the Isle of Man in 1996, there was little to suggest he would become one of the most successful and recognisable competitors in TT history.

"His machine was a Honda RS250R. His sponsor was his friend, the late Paul Bird. His expectations were modest.

"What followed would change the course of his life.

"Thirty years later, Honda Racing has unveiled a special one-off Fireblade livery celebrating that first TT appearance, recreating the colours carried by McGuinness in the Lightweight TT of 1996 and paying tribute to the journey that followed.

"It is a fitting acknowledgement of a career that has become woven into the fabric of the event itself."

The Morecambe Missile raced at the TT for the first time in 1996 and went on to become one of the most famous names in the history of the iconic meeting, winning 23 times.

McGuinness is also due to compete in the Superstock and Senior races at the 2026 event.
