In the first half the hosts came flying out of the traps and played with real intensity. They should have taken the lead in the 8th minute, through Bruno Andrade. He headed towards goal and Myles Boney kept the first effort out, but the ball fell back to Andrade, he could only poke the ball wide.
Morecambe were then introduced to the set piece threat of Rushden. A long throw caused chaos in the Morecambe box, a sign of what was to come.

Morecambe’s first chance fell to Isaac Buckley-Ricketts when he latched onto a Ben Williams long ball. He brought the ball down, but his effort was saved. Ruben Curley then had a great chance to open the scoring, but again the Rushden keeper was equal to it.
The hosts then took the lead in the 20th minute, from a long throw. The ball came arrowing in at a flat angle, and Boney kept the first header out but couldn’t stop James Clifton from hammering the ball home.
Four minutes later, Matt Warburton doubled the lead with a fantastic free kick. From 30 yards out he curled the ball round the wall and into the bottom corner. Buckley-Ricketts could have scored for Morecambe after his shot beat the keeper, but it was well cleared off the line.
Morecambe came out much better in the second half and didn’t need long to fight back. Joe Garner was picked out well by Curley, and he headed into the corner to cut the lead and give the travelling Morecambe fans something to cheer about.
A string of chances then fell to the Shrimps, first Buckley-Ricketts had his shot saved. Then Paul Lewis had a great chance to equalise as he crashed into the box, but his header was straight at the goalkeeper.
In the 65th minute Cameron Coxe hit the post from the edge of the area, as Morecambe continued to put the hosts under pressure. It seemed inevitable that the goal would come but chances then came hard to come by Coxe again looked dangerous, he cut inside on his left foot and nearly found the far corner, but for the out-stretched hand of Charlie Woods in the Rushden goal.
He was nearly beaten by his own player late on, when Freddie Robinson’s sliced clearance narrowly missed the top corner. The final chance fell to Taelor O’Kane but again his header was easily saved and the game ended in defeat.
