Shrimps make it four straight home wins after Southport victory in FA Cup qualifier

Morecambe booked their safe passage into next qualifying round of the FA Cup after a 2-0 victory over Southport at the Halo Aerospace Stadium.

The first half was a cagey affair with neither side showing any real quality. Southport had the first effort at goal in the 9th minute, but Luke Griffiths dragged his shot well wide.

Morecambe’s first shot at goal came from Maty Daly in the 19th minute. Elliot Newby found him in the box, but he couldn’t direct his first time shot at goal.

Jake Cain then came to Morecambe’s rescue in the 31st minute, with a last-ditch sliding tackle to keep the score at 0-0. Cain then went up the other end just a few minutes later and was found on the edge of the area by Teddy Collis. But his shot was deflected wide and the teams went into the break level.  

The shrimps started the second half much better, and were rewarded 10 minutes in. Jake Cain stood over a free-kick 35 yards out from goal and whipped in a cross that was just begging to be finished. Paul Lewis obliged, and his diving header found the bottom corner in front of the Halo stand.

Morecambe can thank goalkeeper Myles Boney, his man of the match performance helping to keep Southport at bay as they piled on the pressure looking for an equaliser.

Liam Hogan was dispossessed on the edge of the area, but Adam Moseley’s shot was well saved by Boney. Four minutes later he was called into action again, this time from a corner.

A short corner routine found Teddy Lavelle in space in the box, but Boney again was able to turn his effort round the post.

Morecambe still threatened on the break, with Cain coming close in the 79th minute. Cameron Coxe’s first time cross was met by a sweet half-volley that was well saved by Southport’s loanee goalkeeper Douglass Lukjanciks, who is on loan from Everton.

Boney once again kept the score at 1-0 in the 86th minute, Moseley having his header pushed for a corner. But there was still time for Morecambe to round the afternoon off, and Isaac Buckley-Ricketts provided the moment. Fed by Lewis in the area, he calmly beat his man before firing across goal and finding the inside of the post to help the ball into the net to wrap up a brilliant afternoon for Morecambe.
