Stoppage time equaliser denies Morecambe win over Oxford City

A stoppage-time volley denied Morecambe all three points at Oxford City in National League North.

A win would have seen the Shrimps victorious for the sixth time in seven games, but were forced to take a share of the spoils after the late leveller at the MGroup Stadium.

The contest began at a measured pace, with neither side able to establish a clear attacking rhythm during a quiet opening 10 minutes.

Morecambe were presented with an opportunity in the 16th minute when Jonny Maxted’s loose pass was seized upon by Matty Daly. His ball towards Teddy Collis ran long, before the forward was shown a yellow card following a challenge on Scott Pollock.

The hosts threatened five minutes later after a loose pass fell into the path of Dejan Tetek, but his tame effort was gathered by Myles Boney.

The Shrimps’ first clear sight of goal arrived after 33 minutes. Ben Williams threaded a pass through to Daly, who lifted his effort narrowly over the crossbar.

Oxford responded three minutes later as Tyrone Marsh tried his luck from 20 yards, although his strike was comfortably held by Boney to ensure the sides went into the interval level.

City started the second half brightly, but excellent defending from Williams prevented the hosts from finding the opening goal.

Morecambe then went close at the other end when the ball dropped kindly for Garner on the edge of the penalty area. The striker met it on the volley, forcing Maxted into a smart save.

The breakthrough arrived in the 55th minute. Williams carried the ball forward before finding Matty Daly, whose superb delivery was met by Garner. The striker made no mistake, smashing the ball into the roof of the net to put the Shrimps ahead.

Oxford began to apply pressure in search of a response, but Adam Lakeland’s side defended resolutely. A dangerous free-kick caused a scramble after 67 minutes, with Cameron Coxe clearing off the line before captain Liam Hogan repeated the feat moments later.

Josh Ashby dragged an effort inches wide in the 78th minute, while substitute Lewis Leigh became the third Morecambe player to make a goal-line clearance when he kept out a corner three minutes later.

The Shrimps came agonisingly close to doubling their advantage with six minutes remaining as Paul Lewis met a cross with a free header, only to see the ball crash against the underside of the crossbar.

Daly then had an opportunity to seal the points in the 89th minute, but Maxted somehow denied him from point-blank range.

That save proved crucial as Oxford found an equaliser in the fourth minute of added time, substitute Alfie Potter striking a volley beyond Boney to rescue a point for the hosts.
