MATCH REPORT: Lancaster Lionesses 17–41 Stockton Rockets

Under blue skies and sunshine, Lancaster Lionesses 1XV welcomed Stockton Rockets for a fiercely contested 80-minute battle on Sunday.

The Lionesses knew early on that they were in for a tough afternoon, with the Rockets crossing the try line just three minutes into the match.

Despite the early setback, Lancaster dug deep and continued to fight throughout, showing determination and attacking intent against a strong opposition.

The Lionesses pressured the Rockets throughout and worked hard to break through their defence.

However, Stockton proved clinical when opportunities arose, capitalising on Lancaster’s mistakes, using space out wide for their wingers to attack and converting those opportunities into tries, keeping the scoreboard ticking over.

Lancaster’s tries showcased exactly what the team is capable of when their attacking game clicks.

Through well-worked phases, quick reloads and accurate passing, the Lionesses created opportunities to move the ball effectively and exploit gaps in the defence. Simple, well-executed plays allowed Lancaster to get over the line.

Anyiache Nonjang got the Lionesses on the scoresheet in the 25th minute, with Gracie Tibbetts (below) adding the conversion a minute later.

The team continued to battle, and Laura Rigby crossed in the corner in the 46th minute to add another try. Gracie Tibbetts then finished off another attacking opportunity in the corner on the hour mark, bringing Lancaster’s tally to three tries.

Despite spending plenty of time in the opposition 22, the Lionesses couldn’t quite find those additional tries. There was no shortage of effort, with the team continuing to push and compete until the final whistle, but the Rockets’ ability to punish errors ultimately proved decisive.

The final score of 17–41 went in Stockton’s favour, but the Lionesses can take positives from their attacking phases, teamwork and the opportunities created throughout the match. A tough result on home soil, but a full 80 minutes of effort from the Lionesses.

Lionesses’ Try Scorers: Anyiache Nonjang – 25’; Laura Rigby – 46'; Gracie Tibbetts – 60’
