Barrow burglar jailed for stealing dog from former partner

A Barrow man who broke into his former partner’s home and took her dog has been sentenced to two years in prison.

Lee Baines, 57, of no fixed address, admitted burglary and was sentenced at Preston Crown Court.

The court heard how Baines had been separated from his former partner since 2020. But on 12 June 2023 he had gone to the home address of his former partner in the Barrow area whilst she was at work, entered her home and left with her dog.

In his police interview, Baines told officers he gave the dog to his former partner three years previous - but never intended for it to be permanent so entered her home whilst she was not there and took the dog.

Baines was found guilty following a trial and was jailed for two years. He was also found to have breached bail conditions.

Detective Sergeant Stewart Glendinning said: “This would have been a distressing incident for the victim from someone who she had been separated from for a number of years.

“The offender’s actions were wrong and entirely inappropriate – which is reflected in the sentencing of the court.

“Cumbria Police is committed to supporting women who suffer at the hands of current or former partners. We urge anyone who is suffering to come forward today. You will be supported and criminal allegations will be investigated thoroughly and sensitively.”
