Woman airlifted to hospital after falling on Lake District mountain on 70th birthday

A woman was airlifted to hospital after falling on a Lake District mountain on her 70th birthday.

The woman fell down near Skew Gill in the Lake District at around 4:30pm yesterday (Monday May 20), injuring her leg and hip, according to Keswick Mountain Rescue Team.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service responded, before a coastguard helicopter flew the woman to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for treatment.

15 team members were involved in the rescue and it took about four hours.

A spokesperson for Keswick Mountain Rescue said: ‘’She took a nasty tumble near Skew Gill on the Corridor Route seriously injuring her leg and hip.

‘’Unfortunately Helimed were unable to land close to the casualty so put down near the Sty Head stretcher box. The air ambulance doctor was then able to access the casualty and give some pain relief. Considering the casualty’s location and possible injuries a Coast Guard helicopter was requested.

‘’Meantime Keswick team members approached on foot from Seathwaite. Coast Guard R199 deployed from Prestwick and arrived on scene around the same time as team members. The casualty was then winched from the gully and flown to RVI Newcastle for treatment.

‘’We wish the casualty a belated happy birthday and a swift recovery.’’
