Beer festival at Lancaster Castle's former prison set to return

The Behind Bars beer festival returns to Lancaster Castle's former prison

A unique craft beer festival held inside a former prison in Lancaster will be back this year after a successful debut.

The Behind Bars Craft Beer Festival will return to Lancaster Castle on Friday May 15 and Saturday May 16 after its first event sold out last year.

Bars will be open in the atmospheric Victorian A-wing prison block, and the recently renovated Castle Keep which dates back to the reign of William II in 1093.

Guests will have private access to these two unique locations plus the secluded chapel court yard in which they may sample up to 50 craft beers.

A-wing will play host to the 'best of the UK bar', with local breweries in the 1093 Keep, and there is a very limited opportunity to hire a private cell for yourself and up to five friends for the duration of your session.

Street food will be available from local favourite Ninja Wraps, with a number of Lancaster-based musicians on hand to entertain guests.

As last year, entry tickets for the event will provide guests with access to the bar areas within the Castle and the prison, as well as a commemorative glass to take home.

For the evening sessions, Behind Bars guests will have access to the whole Castle courtyard, which will be closed to the public, in addition to the Keep and A wing.

There will be three four-hour sessions across the two days.

Tickets are £20 per session and include entry to the event, private access to the Keep and the HMP Lancaster A-wing and your own commemorative glass.

Private cells within A-wing can be hired for £195 with entry included for up to six people, with bench and tables, 12 drinks tokens and early VIP entry to the event.

Capacity is strictly limited, having sold out quickly last year, and tickets can be bought from HERE.

Day one starts at 6pm and Day 2 sessions are at 1pm and 6pm

Behind Bars is being organised by Tim Tomlinson who runs three pubs in Lancaster; The White Cross, Merchants 1688 and the Stonewell Tap.

HMP Lancaster Castle released its last official prisoner in 2011.
