Free Lancaster & Morecambe College community open day will celebrate 200th anniversary

Beyond Radio will be broadcasting live from a free community open day at Lancaster and Morecambe College this weekend to celebrate a 200th anniversary.

The event, between 11am and 3pm on Saturday (July 6), will include a number of free fun activities and taster sessions, at the college’s main Torrisholme Road campus.

The event is one of a number of activities being held to mark the 200th anniversary of technical education in the local area.

The college can trace its roots back to 1824 when the first Institute of Mechanics was set up on Mary Street in Lancaster.

Over the years there have also been technical education centres on Penny Street and the Storey Centre, and also at Poulton Square in Morecambe. The college itself opened on its current site in 1963.

On Saturday there will be the opportunity to meet LMC’s tutors to discuss the range of course options available, tour their facilities, and chat to many local charities and community groups who will be sharing their work for the  community, alongside their volunteering and fundraising opportunities.

And, Beyond Radio will be broadcasting live from the event from noon-3pm.

A spokesperson for LMC said: ‘’We will also have inflatables for adults and a soft-play area for younger children, face painting, sports and art activities, virtual reality films, STEM challenges and the opportunity to meet some of our resident animals.

‘’There will be a football game at 11am for those students who have applied to join LMC in September 2024, and visitors will be able to view our Creative & Visual Studies students' end-of-year exhibition.

‘’We also have performances from Razzamatazz and The Performance Studios on the day.

‘’Food will be available from The Lounge and our Hospitality team will show off their skills with cookery demos throughout the day.’’

Children of all ages and well-behaved dogs are welcome (on lead).

Lancaster City Council are supporting the day by providing officer time and with the provision of food for the event through the Household Support Fund.
