LISTEN: Top Toronto sea shanty crew to headline Morecambe Maritime Festival

Pressgang Mutiny

A leading shanty group from Canada will headline this year's Morecambe Maritime Festival as the event returns to celebrate the town's heritage of the sea.

Pressgang Mutiny will appear in concert at the Morecambe Winter Gardens on the evening of Saturday August 15.

This will round off a day of events for all the family in Morecambe town centre, including performances of sea songs and shanties in local venues, and a variety of outdoor activities on the Promenade.

The festival will raise funds for the Morecambe RNLI.

A festival launch party will be held at The Bath on Friday evening, with live music and a raffle to raise funds.

Activities and music on the main festival day of Saturday August 15 will get under way at around noon.

The festival is free, except for the ticketed concert at the Winter Gardens on Saturday night featuring Pressgang Mutiny, who will be appearing during their UK tour.

Acclaimed folk singer Steve Turner and local shanty group The Mizzen Crew are also on the bill. Doors open at 7pm.

Tickets for the evening concert at the Winter Gardens are available HERE.

During the day, the Winter Gardens will be open with free admission for a maritime model exhibition, an exhibition by Morecambe Camera Club, a display of sea creatures artwork by local schools, and craft stalls.

A mobile museum opposite the Pier will be open to families to look at interactive exhibits and take part in activities based around the sea.

Morecambe Bay Partnership, More Music and the Sea Scouts will also be hosting activities during the festival.

Other festival venues include The Pier Hotel, The Chieftain, The Bath, The Masons, Morecambe Library and the Clock Tower Cafe.

Music performers will include The Scrimshankers, Scolds Bridle, Richard Grainger, Sunderland Point Shanty Crew, Nobody's Friends, Linn Phipps and The Three Radicals.

The festival coincides with the opening of the new Eden Project North Hub at the Winter Gardens on Saturday, and the RNLI Lifeboat Day at the Hovercraft Station near the Midland.

The full festival programme can be found HERE.

Morecambe Maritime Festival is looking for volunteers to help during the weekend. For more information see HERE.
