Night of music in Morecambe to pay tribute to true gentleman of soul scene

The late Nigel Rothwell

A night of soul at a Morecambe venue will pay tribute to a leading figure on the local music scene.

The West End Soul Club will present 'A Night for Nigel Rothwell' at the Golden Ball at Snatchems on Friday May 23 from 7pm.

Nigel, a top soul music DJ from Morecambe, passed away on Saturday December 21 2024.

He was a leading and knowledgeable figure on the local soul scene, playing his favourite tracks and filling dancefloors at venues all over the North West.

Nigel was one of the Morecambe Vinyl Players (MVP) group of DJs and also part of the West End Soul Club.

He was also one of the team who played soul music on the Stone Jetty as part of the Vintage by the Sea festival and Morecambe Music Festival.

Jay Blackburn from the West End Soul Club and the Golden Ball, said Nigel was "an absolute gentleman" and "a massive part of not only the West End Soul Club but the soul scene as a whole" whose "passion for the scene was infectious".

Eleven DJs will play Northern, soul and Motown across two rooms at the Luneside venue on May 23.

The DJ line-up on the night has been announced as Paul 'Soul' Johnson, Jamie Bell, Nick Duffy, Beyond Radio's Ian Cottam from The Soulful Strut show, Darren Mount, Graham Hudson, Alex McDermott, Ian Simpson, Craig Thomas, Jem Booth and Jay Blackburn.

Admission is free with donations to Lancaster & Morecambe School Aid, a cause Nigel supported.

A poster from the last all-nighter at Wigan Casino will be auctioned on the night in aid of School Aid, which raises money for local schools.
