A campaign to raise £150,000 to build a new playground in Ryelands in Lancaster has received a significant boost.
The Walney Extension fund has awarded the Ryelands Residents Association £29,000, which combined with a series of fundraising events throughout the summer, such as sponsored litter picks and stalls at local fun days, takes their current total to well over £30,000.
In September, MP Cat Smith and Yak Patel, Chief Executive of Lancaster District CVS took on the Morecambe 10K, raising more than £1000 for the playground fund.
The group is applying to more funders and planning a series of events in the run up to Christmas.
The new playground will be fully accessible and provide a space for everyone in the local community to have fun and relax, with new equipment, new surfacing, benches and planting.
Jenny Armer, Chair of Ryelands Residents Association said: “It’s such a huge vote of confidence from the Walney Extension Fund that they’ve given us this money.
‘’Now we’ve got the first big grant in the bank, we hope that other funders will soon follow and the playground dream will be a reality. It’s so exciting for the children to see that these big funders believe in our community.”

Cat Smith, MP for Lancaster and Wyre said: “A massive congratulations to Ryelands Residents Association on their successful application to the Walney Extension Fund.
‘’This is the massive kick start the fundraising efforts needed and is testament to the hard work and commitment of the whole community.”
Ryelands Residents’ Association formed in 2022 and meets up every Monday in term time and is open to all local residents. They also hold Community Connect events every Wednesday afternoon at St Chad’s church hall which anyone can join for a brew and a chat.
