An outoor attraction billed as the first of its kind in Europe has been removed from a Lancaster sports centre due to a drop in popularity.

The Gravity flight tower opened in 2017 at Salt Ayre Leisure Centre as a multi-level ultimate extreme outdoor attraction inviting adrenalin enthusiasts to test their nerve with a choice of five possible descent options using free fall, zip wire and bunjee.

The attraction was launched to much fanfare, including presenters of Channel 4 show Who Dare Wins taking on the Gravity tower.

But after the tower was dismantled earlier this month, a spokesperson for owners Lancaster City Council said:

"Since opening in 1993, Salt Ayre Leisure Centre has proudly supported the local community’s needs for sport, recreation, and leisure.

"Over the years, we’ve introduced new facilities to keep pace with changing trends, including the Gravity Tower, which transformed the old outdoor pitch into an exciting activity space.

"While the tower was initially well-used and popular, usage declined significantly.

"Following discussions with members and positive feedback from users, we have decided to remove the Gravity Tower and explore new opportunities for this area.

"As Salt Ayre enters its fourth decade of service, we remain committed to providing innovative, inclusive facilities and will keep our community informed as plans progress."
