More information released ahead of King Charles' visit to Lancaster

King Charles

Road closures and diversions will be in place near Lancaster Castle for the visit of King Charles.

Lancaster City Council has also said there will be brief rolling road closures on the day, Monday June 9.

This will be first visit of the King, who is also the Duke of Lancaster, to the city since he was crowned,

His Majesty will take part in an ancient ceremonial tradition at the John O’Gaunt gateway, where he will be presented with the Keys to the Castle by Mrs Pam Barker DL, Constable of the Castle.

"We are working closely with other local agencies to support the visit," said a Lancaster City Council spokesperson.

"To ensure its success the following measures will be in place:

"Road closures and diversions near Lancaster Castle. There will also be brief rolling road closures throughout the day

"Parking suspended on St Mary’s Parade from 6pm Thursday June 5 to Monday June 9 at 9pm.

"The best vantage point for spectators is Castle Hill but significant restrictions will be in place to ensure the safety of the expected crowds.

"Letters have been delivered to businesses and residents in the vicinity of Lancaster Castle to inform them of any restrictions that may be in place.

"Lancaster is expected to be very busy during the day and we would advise people to allow extra time for their journeys. If you have a business or live in the area and are expecting a delivery, we advise rescheduling for another day."

Following the ceremony, His Majesty will meet representatives from local businesses before joining a reception attended by a variety of organisations from the Lancaster area.

The Lord-Lieutenant of Lancashire, Mrs Amanda Parker JP, said she was delighted at the announcement by Buckingham Palace that The King will make his first official visit to the county of Lancashire.

Mrs Parker, who is The King's representative in the county, will officially greet His Majesty on his arrival into Lancaster. King Charles will then visit the historic Lancaster Castle where he holds the title of Duke of Lancaster.

Mrs Parker said: “I am delighted that His Majesty is coming to Lancashire and look forward to introducing him to many Lancastrian businesses and community organisations.

"This is a very special occasion for our county.”

A number of roads will be closed and barriers in place allowing visitors the chance to welcome The King.  Many organisations are working closely together to make sure that the event is a wonderful occasion for the city.

King Charles was last in the local area in 2022, when he was Prince of Wales.

He met with community organisations and local businesses, at both the Winter Gardens (below, with Professor Vanessa Toulmin, chair of the Winter Gardens Preservation Trust) and Morecambe Fire Station.
