Morecambe FC fans have shown support for their team by clubbing together to raise money for a treat for the players.
They took part in a collection during the friendly match against Hyde United on Tuesday, with the aim of raising money to treat the playing squad to some post match pizzas.
The collection was organised by the former chair of the Shrimps Trust, Rich Allan, who decided to offer the gesture in recognition of the efforts playing staff and management are going to prepare for the season ahead, despite all the off the field uncertainty, and the fact that they, along with all other staff, are still due two thirds of their wages for June.
A collection jar was taken to the game to take cash donations, while an online payment link was also available, with the generosity of Shrimps’ fans raising £312.60.
Rich said: ‘’Hyde, very generously, ended up putting post match food on last night meaning we didn’t need to raise the funds.
‘’We only found this out after the cash was raised. At this point I thought we’d continue as it seemed silly to refund and not do it and people wanted to raise money for the players and staff.
‘’Derek [Adams, manager] personally thanked us saying Hyde had put food on and asked that supporters decide how it’s spent, and I had said previously any extra to go to a food bank.
‘’After speaking to the Trust, we’re keeping the funds ready for the rest of pre-season, should one of the other fixtures leave the team needing money to get something necessary.
‘’Should that not be necessary, we will donate it to Morecambe Food Bank, who were one of the first to offer help when wages were not paid.’’
The friendly ended in a 5-2 victory for Morecambe against their Northern Premier League opponents, thanks to two goals from youngster Billy Whaite, two for Paul Lewis and a Yann Songo’o effort.
In addition to wages still remaining unpaid, the club is currently under a player registration embargo by the National League, while earlier this week, the head of a Morecambe FC supporters group says the crisis-hit football club is "effectively grinding to a halt".
