A taxi driver was suspended as part of a licencing crackdown amid concerns that out-of-area private hire vehicles were operating improperly in the Lancaster district.
Lancaster City Council’s Licensing Team carried out checks at Lancaster Railway Station alongside licensing officers from Blackburn with Darwen Council, following an increase in reports from the local trade.
The team inspected licensed vehicles arriving at and departing from the station, checking licences, vehicle details and compliance with licensing requirements - also looking for evidence of any illegal passenger pick-ups.
The team found that a vast majority of vehicles were operating lawfully.
One driver was suspended from operation for failing to display the required driver identification badge.
Officers also identified several minor issues relating to vehicle signage and licence plate positioning, which were addressed.
Councillor Paul Stubbins, Lancaster City Council’s member with responsibility for licensing, said: “We received reports about out-of-area licensed vehicles operating in the district. Where issues and concerns are reported to us, they are taken seriously and investigated.
"These checks are about safeguarding passengers, ensuring licensing standards are being met, and ensure that drivers and operators who follow the rules are not placed at a disadvantage.
"It was encouraging to find that there was no evidence of illegal passenger pick-ups and the overwhelming majority of drivers were complying with the law.
“The licensing team will continue to prioritise working with neighbouring authorities to investigate reports, carry out compliance checks and where issues are identified, we will take appropriate action.”
Passengers are also being reminded to use legitimate licensed taxi and private hire services. Drivers should clearly display their identification badge, and licensed vehicles must display a valid licence plate so passengers can travel with confidence.
Lancaster City Council licensed drivers and vehicles are subject to robust application, safeguarding and safety requirements, helping to ensure residents and visitors have access to safe, reliable and professional transport services.
