Barry Roche is to leave Morecambe Football Club to pursue new opportunities, ending a 17-year association with the Shrimps.
Roche first arrived at the club in 2008 and quickly established himself as a key figure both on and off the pitch.
During his twelve years as a player, he would go on to make over 400 appearances in goal in all competitions for Morecambe, captaining the side for much of that time and becoming a fan favourite for his consistency, leadership, and commitment to the badge. His time in goal saw Morecambe through some of its most defining moments in the Football League.
Perhaps one of the most iconic moments of Roche's playing career came in February 2016, when he scored a dramatic 94th-minute equaliser against Portsmouth.
Following Jim Bentley's departure as manager in October 2019, Roche also assumed the role of caretaker player-manager. Roche's only match in charge was the 1-0 home win against Leyton Orient in League Two in November 2019.
Following his retirement from playing in 2020, Roche transitioned into a coaching role, becoming the club's first-team goalkeeping coach. In the years since, he has been instrumental in the development of goalkeepers across the club.
Speaking on Barry's departure, manager Derek Adams said: "I would like to thank Barry on behalf of the players and backroom staff for his huge contribution to Morecambe Football Club as a player and as a coach."
"When I took over as First Team Manager in 2019, my first decision was to promote Barry to my coaching staff. He will be leaving behind many friends after his long association with the club, and we all send him best wishes in his new role."
Co-Chairman Rod Taylor added: "All of us as directors would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Barry Roche for his outstanding service to Morecambe Football Club.
‘’Barry has demonstrated unwavering dedication, professionalism, and passion throughout his time with us.
‘’His leadership and commitment have been instrumental both as a player and as a coach, and his presence will be greatly missed. We wish him the very best and will always welcome him back as a friend and is a true club legend."
