Defeat for Shrimps in opening pre-season friendly

Morecambe slipped to a 2-0 defeat in their opening pre-season friendly of the summer against Warrington Town.

The Shrimps, who postponed a friendly against Workington last week over injury concerns, finally got some competitive minutes under their belt against the Yellows, who will play in the National League North this term, following their promotion last season.

Two senior players – midfielder Jake Taylor and defender Donald Love - were absent from the travelling squad, which included four trialists on the bench, alongside academy players Lennon Dobson and Cameron Rooney.

The hosts earned the victory on the afternoon thanks to an effort from Buckley after 25 minutes, who slotted home off the post, and a second half deflected strike from Buckley-Ricketts seven minutes after half time.

Derek Adams’ men are next in action on Tuesday, with a trip to Southport, before a trip to Burscough next Saturday.

Morecambe then end their pre-season programme with two home fixtures against League One opposition at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium – Blackpool on Tuesday July 25, and Wigan Athletic on Saturday July 29.
