Lancaster City recorded their third victory in four games after beating Workington in the Northern Premier League on Bank Holiday Monday.

It was goals from two strikers who got off the mark for the season to earn the Dolly Blues the points on a hot day at the Giant Axe, in a 2-0 win.

Lewis Mansell tested the visiting goalkeeper Alex Mitchell at full stretch, before Steven Rigg tried to bundle home a cross which was gathered by Brad Kelly.

Next, Toby Oliver's header on goal was saved by Mitchell but on nine minutes he was powerless to stop the opener. It all happened down the right, as Sam Bailey played in Jim Craig and his ball across the face of goal was turned in by Mansell to open his account.

For the next period of the game, Workington got a foothold into the game and chances were restricted for both sides. On the half hour mark Atkinson headed towards goal, with the effort saved by Kelly. Then, Steven Yawson, starting his first game since singing from Kendal Town, curled an effort at goal which was saved by Mitchell, before Lewis Mansell was then denied a second.

Workington’s Steven Rigg had a glorious chance at the back post to equalise but was put off by Moonan who put it out for a corner and David Symington let fly from 30 yards out with a free kick, which had Brad Kelly well beaten but the effort flew just over the bar.

Into the second half and Workington had an opening within the first minute. A ball came into the box came off a Lancaster defender and in a melee, the visitors thought they'd scored as the ball bounced close to the line, but the referee did not give the goal.

Sharif Islam Deans looked the most dangerous for Workington and on 71 minutes it took a double save to stop his initial header and his follow up shot.

The game continued to be well contested and with the Dolly Blues heading into the 10 minutes of added time with a slender advantage, substitute Joe Amison teed up fellow substitute Dom Lawson at the back post to head home and seal all three points.

Lancaster are now 6th in the Northern Premier League table.

Next up for the Dolly Blues is Emirates FA Cup First Round Qualifying at home to Whitby Town on Saturday 30th August with a 3pm kick off.
