Lancaster City gain well earned point on the road at Gainsborough

Lancaster City played out a goalless draw with Gainsborough Trinity in the Northern Premier League.

It was to be a well-earned point in Lincolnshire as defences were on top in this Bank Holiday encounter.

It was the Dolly Blues who were the fastest out of the blocks and had the first chance on goal after six minutes. Nathan Caine made waves down the right hand side and played a ball into the box for Lewis Mansell, but his header went over the bar under pressure.

It was then Trinity's turn to attack, with Christian Sloan timing his defensive challenge to perfection as Frank Mulhern would have been through on goal, before he had another sight on goal from 25-yards out, easily saved by Brad Kelly.

Next, Matty Clarke, in for Lewis Coulton cut inside from the left, forcing Trinity goalkeeper David Robson to parry the ball away, the following cross gave Mansell another headed chance, which was gathered by Robson.

The best headed chance came on the 28th minute. Sam Bailey's corner initially blocked was sent back into the box second time round from Evangelinos and Dylan Moonan with a free header puts it wide aiming for the top right hand corner.

After a lengthy stoppage to facilitate a change of official,  Javelle Clarke put Jonathan Margetts through on goal for the hosts, but he sliced his effort wide, before Fraser Preston on the 11th minute of added time curled his free kick round the wall which was saved low by Kelly.

The second half stated the same as the first with Lancaster City in the ascendency. Christian Sloan taking the ball off the toes of Javelle Clarke, driving into the box but his effort wasn't cleanly hit and saved by Robson.

The chances were few and far between until the 74th minute, when substitute Dom Lawson broke through and rounded the Trinity 'keeper, but his shot was cleared off the line by former Dolly Harrison Beeden.

Jim Craig had an effort on the edge on the box on 81 minutes plucked out the air by Robson, before finding himself through on goal again minutes later, but his lob didn’t find the target.

The last real chance for either side came on 89 minutes, Sam Bailey's throw was cleared by Robson, who could only punch it back to Bailey who tried the lob, but it landed on the roof of the net.

Next up for the Dolly Blues is a game at the Giant Axe on Bank Holiday Monday, against Workington.
