The Dollies started as they meant to go on five minutes in, with Nic Evangelinos threading through an inch-perfect ball to Steven Yawson who tested Calvin Hare at his near post; the Prescot ‘keeper saved well in the first of many impressive stops.
City’s number 11 saw another effort kept out by Hare after some terrific work by Evangelinos and Jim Craig to tee him up, both doing well to stay on their feet in a crowded 18 yard box before Yawson had a shot palmed away.
Sam Bailey hit one from 25 yards on 13 minutes but it was fired well wide, before Evangelinos chipped just over after constant pressure from City set pieces.
Prescot had several corners to defend around the half hour mark after they allowed Steven Yawson space to shoot and force another save from Hare.
Ben Elliott fired wide across the goalmouth in Cables’ first effort of the game 35 minutes in, before Bradley Moonan saw his effort from a corner cleared off the line by brother Dylan.
Yawson’s 25-yard free kick on the stroke of half time curled past the Prescot defence but just trickled past the post in the last action of the first half.
After the restart, Dylan Thompson pinged a superb ball down the line to Craig but his effort was straight at Hare, who was further challenged moments later by Evangelinos from close range, but he was equal to it.
Prescot Cables captain Charley Doyle saw two ambiguous punts fly over the bar in a half where Brad Kelly was barely tested.
At the other end though, Cables’ defence were standing firm after several set pieces and balls into the box were well cleared.
Substitute Charlie Bailey injected a new energy into the game after a brief quiet spell, his effort within minutes of his introduction was deflected behind and the corner was subsequently dealt with.
Christian Sloan saw a lovely effort whistle wide moments before the deadlock was broken.
Six minutes from time, Joe Amison floated in a terrific ball from the right and Evangelinos turned and beat his man before volleying low into the bottom corner, finally and deservedly unlocking a stubborn Cables defence after persistent attempts.
That would prove to be the last significant action of the game and the Dollies secured a huge win under the lights, moving Jimmy Marshall’s side up to third in the NPL Premier Division table.
Next up is a trip to Stocksbridge Park Steels on Saturday (November 29).
