Lancaster City travel to Morpeth Town looking to get back on track

Lancaster City visit Morpeth Town hoping to put their last two losses on the road behind them.

City have lost 5-0 to Ashton United and 2-1 to Matlock Town in the last week and a half.

Before those defeats, Lancaster had enjoyed a run of six league games unbeaten, making it a rather positive start under manager Chris Willcock, who joined in mid-January.

The Dolly Blues are currently seventh in the NPL Premier Division, five points outside the playoff places.

However, Guiseley - the team in the last of those playoff spots - have two games in hand over Lancaster.

They face each other later this month in what may prove to be a huge game in the race for a top five finish.

Willcock said last Saturday that, despite the defeat to Matlock, Lancaster “showed what we are about” in the second half of the game, during which they scored a consolation goal through Nic Evangelinos after two first half strikes from the Derbyshire side.

Forward and joint top scorer for City this season, Charlie Bailey, was forced off through injury last weekend - it is unknown whether he will be fit to play on Saturday.

Morpeth are sitting comfortably in mid table in 13th place, well clear of the danger of relegation but also far away from the playoff contenders.

However, they come into this game having played two home games back to back and taken maximum points from them, beating FC United of Manchester and Atherton Collieries 3-0 and 2-1 respectively.

Lancaster’s task is to stop it being three straight wins for the Northumberland club.

The result in the reverse fixture was a 3-2 win for Lancaster in October, with the evergreen David Norris’ winner proving to be the difference.

Morpeth Town v Lancaster City kicks off at 3pm on Saturday (March 16) at Craik Park.

Saturday’s fixture is the last of three consecutive away games for the Dolly Blues, before they return to The Giant Axe on Non League Day (March 23), when they face Marine AFC.
