Burton-in-Kendal born Georgia Wilson played her part as Wigan Warriors Women defeated St Helens 16-12 in the Super League Grand Final on Sunday.

The win, sealed on home turf, tops off a superb season for the Cherry and Whites, with a historic treble having been secured at the Brick Community Stadium.

It’s the team’s first ever treble and it's the first time that they’ve won the Grand Final since 2018, in Wilson’s first spell at the club.

The game was watched by a record Women’s Grand Final crowd of 5,018.

Wilson has recently assumed the role of co-captain alongside the long-serving Vicky Molyneux.

The final marked the end of Molyneux’s playing time with the club, as the 37-year-old announced her retirement ahead of Sunday’s curtain drawer.

Molyneux and Wilson lifted the Grand Final trophy together after the full-time whistle.

The Warriors had already denied Saints a title once before this season, comprehensively beating them 42-6 in the Women’s Challenge Cup final  in June.

It was also against St Helens that Wigan secured the League Leaders’ Shield in September, edging out a close contest 24-20, with Wilson scoring a try in the first half.

Sunday’s Grand Final win wasn’t always a comfortable one: the Warriors trailed 8-4 at the break.

However, two tries from Molly Jones and a clinching four points from Anna Davies in the second half gave Wigan the 16-12 victory.

Wilson told the Wigan Warriors club website: “I believed from the start and that remained regardless of whether we were down at half time – I knew our girls would do the job.

“I have so much belief in every single one of girls as well as Denis [Betts, head coach] and the coaching staff.”

On the record Women’s Grand Final attendance, she added: “When we won the Grand Final in 2018 the crowd would have been around a thousand, but today we set a new record.

“We wouldn’t be where we are without the support from the competition and sponsors, plus all the work behind the scenes to push women’s sport.

“The crowd made such a difference. It sounded as loud as it did on Friday night for Men’s Semi-Final as the noise echoed around the stadium – we’re not used to that. It felt like they were stood behind you and getting you over that line.”

Wilson, who was a guest on Beyond Radio’s Saturday Sport Show in June, was born in Burton-in-Kendal and played for Kendal Rugby Club growing up before joining Wigan Warriors Rugby League Club while studying at the University of Lancashire in Preston.

While studying, she also played for the Lancaster City FC Ladies.

More recently, Wilson has been involved with the Vale of Lune Rugby Union Club, having coached them on occasion, and also supported, coached and trained Heysham Atoms Rugby League Club after their women’s team were reformed in 2022.

She has had two spells at Warriors, returning to the club last year after just under 18 months out in Australia, where she represented Souths Logan Magpies and Norths Devils.

Wilson made her first England appearance in October 2019 against Australia, and appeared again a month later against Papua New Guinea.

She later played in further international matches, including in a Test series against Canada Ravens in 2022 and test games versus Wales, including over this summer when she scored a try in a 62-0 win.

Wilson is also the club’s women’s and girls’ development officer, and since assuming that role, several women’s team games have been part of a double bill at the Brick Community Stadium, attracting thousands of fans.
