Morecambe beat young Everton side on penalties in Papa John's Trophy

Farrend Rawson grabs the equaliser at the Mazuma on Tuesday night.

Morecambe beat an Everton Under 21s side on penalties in their first Papa John's Trophy group match.

A late equaliser from Farrend Rawson forced a shoot out against the Premier League youngsters, then the Shrimps triumphed 7-6 with Anthony O'Connor tucking away the decisive spot-kick.

The entertaining end-to-end game saw Morecambe lead twice in the first-half through Jensen Weir and man of the match Caleb Watts, before Everton went ahead 3-2 with defensive mistakes proving costly.

But experience told as Rawson popped up at the near post late in the 90 minutes to head home from Love's cross and force a 3-3 draw.

Despite a bad penalty miss from Dylan Connolly extending the shootout, the Shrimps secured their second spot kicks triumph of the season following their Carabao Cup heroics against Stoke City.

This earned Morecambe two points in their Papa John's Trophy group which also includes Hartlepool United and Harrogate Town, Hartlepool winning 2-0 in their clash also on Tuesday night.

The attendance at the Mazuma was 912.
