Morecambe boxer Isaac Lowe scores first round knockout win then squares up to rival Lee McGregor

Isaac Lowe scored an impressive first round knockout win over Jonatas Rodrigo then went face-to-face with the man he was originally supposed to fight.

'The Westgate Warrior' finished Rodrigo in style, after the Brazilian stepped in to replace his scheduled opponent McGregor when he pulled out through injury.

Lowe improved his professional record to 24 wins from 29 contests with the quick-fire victory over a willing but overmatched opponent.

The Morecambe man came out boxing behind his jab, there was some give and take early on, then suddenly Lowe caught Rodrigo with a clean left hook.

Sensing his man was hurt, Isaac unleashed a barrage of punches ending with a left hook to the body which sent Rodrigo crumpling to the canvas for the full count.

Afterwards Lowe was joined in the ring by McGregor, and had to be pulled away by cornerman, Heysham boxing coach Bob Howard, as heated words were exchanged.

The former Commonwealth Featherweight Champion, friend and training partner of Morecambe's world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, then spoke to the Seconds Out boxing website after the fight.

"To be honest with you I thought I was going to get more rounds out of him," he said.

"He tried to come forward a bit and I slowed it down, then caught him with a beauty of a left hook. I thought it was a good performance.

"It could have been a banana skin tonight. I've done a 12-week camp and if I don't fight, I don't get paid. Everyone wants to get paid before Christmas.

"I've got nothing but respect for Lee McGregor. I like the lad. He's a game lad, he wears his heart on his sleeve. But I don't need Lee McGregor. I make my own way.

"We'll see what happens. I'm looking forward to the fight. It's one of those fights where I've got to bite my teeth and train hard. Let's get it on!"

Lowe vs Rodrigo was shown on Channel 5's live boxing show on Friday night.

The card at the Toughsheet Stadium in Bolton also saw Morecambe's Nelson Birchall make his professional debut, as the former amateur stand-out scored a points victory over Eliecer Quezada.
