Kayden Harrack was sent off as Morecambe lost 3-0 to Huddersfield Town in the EFL Cup.
The Shrimps conceded three first-half goals against the League One club to be eliminated in the first round of the competition.
The Huddersfield goals came from Jaheim Headley, Callum Marshall and Danny Ward.
Jordan Slew fired over the crossbar in the second-half but chances were few and far between for the Shrimps.
Harrack was dismissed with 15 minutes left for a second yellow card.
Morecambe's first home game of the League 2 season is against Gillingham on Saturday.
"We had a horrendous start, we lost a goal after 30 seconds and we had a player sent off in the second-half," said Morecambe manager Derek Adams, speaking after the game.
"Huddersfield are a Championship club relegated to League One. They deserved to win the match, there's no doubt about it. We've learned a lot tonight and that's the important thing to take away."
