Morecambe lose top scorer as Michael Mellon recalled from loan spell

Morecambe’s top scorer, Michael Mellon, has been recalled from his loan spell by parent club, Burnley.

The 20-year-old was among a number of young players signed in the summer on a season long loan, but the Clarets have now activated the clause in the deal, which allows a club to recall a player on such a deal within the January transfer window, to then either return to that squad, or be loaned out to a different club.

Mellon has enjoyed a superb first half of the campaign, scoring 15 times in all competitions in 27 appearances, including 13 times in League Two.

This included a hat-trick, the first of his professional career, in the Shrimps’ victory over AFC Wimbledon in October.

His performances also earned him international recognition, with the forward earning his first two caps at Scotland U21 level.

In a statement, the club said: ‘’Michael leaves Morecambe with our very best wishes and we thank him for all his efforts during his time at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium.’’

Earlier today (Monday January 8), it was confirmed midfielder Eli King had returned to his parent club, Cardiff City.

Shrewsbury Town winger Tom Bloxham remains as Morecambe’s only loan player, with his future due to confirmed.
