Morecambe’s bid to avoid relegation from the National League was dealt a crushing blow following a 2-2 draw with Carlisle United at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium.
The Shrimps – who were unchanged from the side that beat high flying Rochdale on Good Friday – began the day six points adrift of safety with four games remaining.
But the failure to secure all three points against the Cumbrians, coupled with fellow strugglers Eastleigh winning their fixture, means Jim Bentley’s men are now eight points from safety with only nine to play for.
Relegation to National League North – a level Morecambe haven’t played in since 1995 – will be confirmed if either Morecambe fail to beat Woking on Saturday, or if Eastleigh win their fixture against Altrincham.

Here’s the thoughts of myself and @CassBen1 straight after a 2-2 draw between Morecambe and Carlisle, that leaves the Shrimps eight points adrift of safety in the National League with three games to play.

In a game that Morecambe had to win, the Shrimps took the lead in the 32nd minute, after a long throw from Harlee Dean wasn’t cleared by the Carlisle defence, and Gwion Edwards provided an accomplished finish from 15 yards.
The visitors were on top for large periods of the second half, and it took just three minutes after the restart for Mark Hughes’s men to equalise, as Regan Linney fired home low into the corner from the edge of the box.
They then took the lead midway through the second half, as a long punt up field by goalkeeper Gabe Breeze saw David Ajiboye run on, outpacing substitute George Thomas before cutting in and finishing low past Myles Boney.
The Shrimps were given hope eight minutes from time, as former Morecambe midfielder Harvey Macadam headed into his own net after a corner wasn’t cleared.
The 2-2 draw against a side third in the table might have been considered a good result earlier in the season, but the point moves Morecambe to the brink of relegation to the sixth tier of English football.
