Joe Amison’s second goal of the season was enough after 95 minutes of action in Staffordshire, after his composed volley from a flick on arrowed into Dino Visser’s bottom right corner leaving the ‘keeper helpless.
The hosts did have their chances, Oliver Shenton came close inside five minutes, a powerful header from Lucas Weir’s cross somehow clawed away by Brad Kelly at his left hand post.
More chances followed for Leek, Weir again forcing Kelly into a diving stop from a freekick 25 yards out. Having beaten the wall, Kelly as the last line of defence secured his sixth clean sheet of the season.
The first half began in typical City fashion as of late, a well worked move ended in a corner. The corner from Sam Bailey caused havoc inside the area which eventually lead to a blocked shot following a round of pinball.
Ollie Shenton’s header was the best chance of the half for Leek, the eventual ball in derived from a free kick initially played short. The move ended with Shenton producing a powerful header towards Kelly’s goal which the ‘keeper was superbly equal too despite looking beaten initially.
The chances were few and far between after the early chances, City looked comfortable with the ball but couldn’t break down a rigid Blues defence.
Jimmy Marshall’s side did grow into the first half as it grew to a close. Steven Yawson looked threatened running direct into the area from the flank. A surging run from him found the top goal scorer with a sight at goal before he opening up the chance for Nathan Caine. The move eventually fell to Bobby Bjork who saw his effort deflected behind.
The half did come to a close with City on the ascendancy but still kept level by Leek.
The second half started in similar fashion but this time for the hosts. They looked threatening once more but their moves were quickly ended by Toby Oliver and Joe Amison.
The best chance of the half did come for Leek, Lucas Weir’s free kick one of few efforts on target for the hosts.
Once more, the chances were few and far between despite a few shuffles of the pack from City’s side.
The winning goal did eventually come through Joe Amison’s brilliant strike from 12 yards. Sam Bailey’s trademark long throw was flicked on by Jack Wright which teed up Amison to fire a low driven volley past Visser who stood no chance.
City saw the game out with as much composure as they had throughout the game. The unbeaten run stretching to ten and their position at the top further cemented.
Up next for the Dolly Blues is a tough home game against Hednesford Town on Saturday, October 18.
