New website launched ahead of International Youth Games heading to Lancaster in 2027

A Europe-wide sporting event dating back more than half a century is being held in Lancaster in 2027.

The International Youth Games, which sees Lancaster and three twin towns compete across several different sports, celebrated its 50th year in 2025, and next year is being held in the city.

The Games brings young people together from across Europe through sport, culture and international friendship, with teams from Aalborg in Denmark, Almere in the Netherlands and Rendsburg in Germany competing in previous events.

A new website has been launched to showcase what the games are about, and for people to find out more about how they can support or get involved in the event.

A spokesperson said: ‘’The International Youth Games bring together young people from Lancaster and its twin and partner cities for several days of sport, friendship and cultural exchange.

‘’The Games are about much more than competition. They give young people the chance to meet others from different countries, represent their city, build confidence and create memories that can last a lifetime.

‘’Taking part can help build confidence, independence, teamwork and communication skills. For many participants, the Games are also a first chance to represent their city, travel internationally, welcome visitors into their community or make friends from another country.

‘’The Games also bring local clubs, families, volunteers and organisations together, creating a shared event that celebrates young people and strengthens links between communities.’’

Participants have the opportunity to meet young people from other countries, experience different cultures, develop confidence and represent their city with pride.

The 2027 event will take place between Friday 23 – Monday 26 July 2027, and is being planned as a multi-day international youth event involving sport, cultural exchange, civic links and community participation.

The programme is expected to include sports competitions, opening and closing ceremonies, social events for young people and leaders, civic activities, and opportunities for local families and volunteers to be part of the Games.

Confirmed sports so far include athletics, badminton, basketball, rowing, swimming, tennis and water polo, at venues including Salt Ayre Leisure Centre, Lancaster and Morecambe Athletics Club, John O’Gaunt Rowing Club and Bowerham Lawn Tennis Club.

The 2026 event, due to take place in Almere later this month, was cancelled back in February due to funding issues.
