More than £10,000 has been raised to help a Lancaster family whose home was wrecked by fire after an e-bike exploded.
An event held at the Park Hotel in Lancaster on Saturday night raised £1640 for the Beaton family, said organiser Kellie Howson, on top of £8,935 from a fundraising page.
Andy and Brenda Beaton, and their children, have been forced to move out of their home following the blaze earlier this year.
An e-bike, bought as a present, exploded as it charged in the middle of the night and the fire rapidly spread through the house, gutting the entire property within minutes.
The family was only saved because Andy and Brenda's son got up in the middle of the night to get a drink.
He heard several 'pop' sounds from the kitchen and alerted Mr Beaton, who ran downstairs and threw the bike out of the house.
His wife and daughter only managed to escape from the upstairs landing after he rushed back and forth from the kitchen with buckets of water to quell the flames.
It left Mr Beaton with blisters over his head and body.
The fire, which happened on June 25, caused £50,000 in damage.
The blaze destroyed the family's belongings and they are unable to return to the house for four months while repairs take place.
National charity Electrical Safety First has called on the government to impose stricter controls on the sales of batteries for e-bikes-and e-scooters after a series of catastrophic battery fires that have ripped through homes and resulted in injuries and in some cases, deaths.
London Fire Brigade alone has attended 86 fires involving an e-bike this year, and 18 involving an e-scooter.
A government spokesperson said: “The Office for Product and Safety and Standards is working closely with the fire brigade to ensure product safety issues are properly assessed and action is taken to protect consumers.
“If manufacturers don’t comply with product safety regulations, appropriate enforcement action will be taken such as ordering the removal of the product from the market.”
