A new mast has been installed in central Lancaster which the MP hopes has led to improved signal for mobile internet users.
Cat Smith, MP for Lancaster & Wyre, said that the new mast has gone live and "over the past couple of weeks Vodafone, Three, and o2 customers should hopefully have seen some improved signal reliability as the mast services these networks".
Many customers have been suffering no or poor mobile phone connectivity across large parts of the city for years.
In April, we reported that Ms Smith had called for urgent government intervention to speed along a replacement site as users continued to experience mobile signal problems.
This came after continued vandalism to the former Telephone House on Fenton Street in Lancaster led to a mast on top of the building going offline in June 2025.
This week, the MP said: "Just over a year since the Vodafone (and o2) mast was vandalised, I have been working hard pulling together telecom companies, local building owners and council planning team, and I'm pleased to update you that a new mast has been installed in the central area of Lancaster - which is now live!
"Does this mean everything's fixed? Sadly no! Mobile internet coverage in the UK is worse than any EU or G7 country, and the difference between indoor and outdoor signal can fluctuate hugely.
"I'm already working with infrastructure providers, telecom companies, and other city centre building owners both public and private, trying to get a permanent fix to this historically poor signal."
People posting on Ms Smith's Facebook page after she announced the new mast had been installed, gave a mixed response to whether they had experienced improvements.
Darren said: "I'm on Tesco/O2 it's slightly better in the city centre now but still patchy."
Ann said: "Can't say I've noticed any difference, unfortunately."
Sarah said: "No difference to me - Vodafone customer."
And Richard said: "Hopefully an improvement. The phone signal in Lancaster and Morecambe is terrible at times, even in the town centres."
