A disused allotment in Morecambe has been transformed into a special space for military veterans from across the local community.
Morecambe FC Community Foundation proudly welcomed more than 40 guests to the official opening of the Veterans Sanctuary over the weekend.
The opening ceremony was attended by military veterans, local charities, sponsors, volunteers, and friends of the Foundation, and was formally opened by Mrs Amanda Parker JP, His Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Lancashire, alongside The Right Worshipful the Mayor of the City of Lancaster, Councillor Colin Hartley.
The Veterans Sanctuary has been developed to provide a safe, supportive environment where veterans can improve their mental wellbeing, reduce social isolation, and rediscover a sense of purpose.
Through gardening, teamwork, and shared experiences, participants benefit from physical activity, social connection, and a strong sense of community while developing confidence, practical skills, and positive mental health.

In April 2025, Morecambe FC Community Foundation took responsibility for a neglected allotment site containing derelict sheds and years of accumulated waste. Since then, local veterans, volunteers, and members of the allotment committee have worked tirelessly to breathe new life into the space.
Together, they have removed more than 20 tonnes of rubbish and laid 13 tonnes of hardcore, creating the foundations for what has become the Veterans Sanctuary.
Despite challenging winter weather conditions, including strong winds and heavy rain, volunteers remained committed to bringing the vision to life. Their determination and dedication have transformed an abandoned site into a thriving community asset that will benefit veterans for years to come.
The Foundation also recognised the invaluable contribution of its sponsors, whose generosity helped make the project possible.
Tony Brankin, Veteran Officer, Morecambe FC Community Foundation, said: "The incredible support from our sponsors made this transformation possible.
‘’Without their commitment and belief in the project, Veterans Sanctuary would still be a work in progress. We are extremely grateful for their support and for the dedication shown by every volunteer who helped turn this vision into reality."
