Plans for a new Aldi supermarket in south Lancaster have been given the thumbs up.
Lancaster City Council planning regulatory committee granted permission for the new food store at Lawsons Bridge just off Scotforth Road.
The full application was for "erection of a food store (Class E) with land regrading, access, cycle route, landscaping and swales and the provision of associated infrastructure, including car and cycle parking facilities, vehicle charging spaces, pedestrian access routes and servicing".
The site is owned by Aldi who have other stores in Lancaster, Morecambe and Carnforth.
Planning permission was previously given for a Booths food store on the land.
At a meeting at Morecambe Town Hall on Monday, councillors on the committee voted unanimously in favour of awarding planning permission, with a number of conditions.
Councillor Tom Fish said: "The main thing is people will be getting an affordable food shop in south Lancaster.
"It's got to be good for university students who can walk there or cycle."
Councillor Alan Greenwell said: "I like the architecture of this."
And Councillor Catherine Potter said: "I know how needy this part of Lancaster is for nearby low-cost shopping.
"I think this will greatly enhance the lives of people who live in this part of Lancaster. And I think it looks as attractive as a supermarket can look."
Simon Plumb from Aldi, speaking to Beyond Radio after the meeting, said he was "delighted" at the decision and that they would now "work through the (planning) conditions with a view to beginning work as soon as possible".
