Story of record-breaking Morecambe Bay swimmer told in new book

Maud Wensley's story is told in 'The Raven Haired Girl'

A new book tells the real-life tale of the first and fastest woman ever to swim Morecambe Bay.

Maud Wensley's story is told in 'The Raven Haired Girl' - available now.

The book has been written by Maud's grandson David Palmer-Davies.

In 1912, she became the first woman to swim Morecambe Bay from Grange over Sands to Morecambe, a distance of around 10 miles.

She was disqualified at the time for being 'out of bounds' at the finishing point which was the Stone Jetty - but then returned two years later to swim the Bay in the exact same time of two hours and 21 minutes, which is still recognised today as the fastest time ever recorded for a woman.

The race attracted thousands of spectators.

The book is described as follows.

"Shaped by mystery, ‎resilience and the quiet strength of family, David Palmer Davies' 'The Raven-Haired Girl' weaves a ‎tale based on a long-forgotten sporting pioneer, Maud Wensley. Balancing loss and renewal, and ‎set against a backdrop of emotional discovery, the narrative follows Maud through unexpected ‎turns, where the past whispers secrets and the present demands courage.

"With poignant insight, this ‎short story captures the essence of connection, both lost and found, leaving readers moved and ‎reflective long after the final page.‎"

It is now available at Amazon, Waterstones and other outlets.
