Special all-terrain scooters are being made available so people with mobility issues can enjoy more of the Morecambe Bay landscape.
Local volunteers are gearing up for the season ahead helping those who have poor mobility to rediscover the joy of getting outdoors.
Thanks to a collaboration with the Community Hub at the Vic at Grange-over-Sands and volunteers at Sunderland Point, near Heysham, locals with impaired mobility or poor health now have the opportunity to spend time enjoying the special landscape on their doorstep.
Getting out into nature is a simple pleasure that many take for granted but with around 1 in 10 people lacking the stamina to walk far, sadly this activity, so vital to health and happiness, is not an option for many people.
Trampers are rugged all-terrain scooters which can be taken off road and now, it is possible to hire them from Grange Library to enjoy a choice of Tramper-friendly routes. The Trampers are robust enough to go up on to Hampsfell taking a rugged, woodland and fell trail to a stunning viewpoint which offers awe-inspiring views of Morecambe Bay.
Trampers can also be hired at Sunderland Point allowing people access to a unique, tidal landscape with comfort and ease to enjoy the incredible birdlife around the Lune Estuary and be enchanted by an intriguing place with their friends and family.
Morecambe Bay Partnership, a local charity, is recruiting more volunteers to help run hire points in Grange-over-Sands and to reopen a site near Haverthwaite with a Tramper-friendly route around the beautiful Roudsea Woods and Mosses National Nature Reserve.
The voluntary Tramper service has been set up as part of the More to Explore project which aims to increase access to the coast and countryside around Morecambe Bay for more people.
Richard Frank from Morecambe Bay Partnership said “We’re delighted to be working alongside our volunteers to provide this free service. We hope that many locals as well as visitors will enjoy the Trampers. We’re thrilled to offer an opportunity for people to rediscover places they thought they would never be able to enjoy.’’
Morecambe Bay Partnership wants to grow the network of Tramper hire points. Anyone interested in hiring a Tramper or becoming a volunteer can find out more here.
