Morecambe’s winning run ended at Southport

Morecambe's three game winning run is ended after a 2-1 defeat at Southport in National League North.

The first half was dominated by the hosts as the Shrimps couldn’t gain any control in the game. Myles Boney kept the game at 0-0 in the 24th minute with a fine save from Adam Moseley, who is on loan from Wigan Athletic.

However, from the resulting corner, Morecambe failed to clear their lines and Moseley picked up the scraps and fired Southport into a well-deserved lead.  

Former Shrimp Jordan Slew then gave Morecambe a real scare when he rattled the bar from the edge of the area in the 38th minute.

Morecambe’s only real chance came in the 43th minute, when Will Smith had a header at goal from a set-piece, but his effort was cleared off the line.   

Morecambe’s second half performance was much improved as they went looking for an equaliser. Liam Hogan flashed a header across goal in the 55th minute, but Morecambe’s best chance to equalise came ten minutes later.

Joe Garner was picked out by Smith from the right-hand side and had a free header just three yards out. But he fired straight at the goalkeeper when he really should have done better.  

Morecambe pushed and pushed all half and spent the majority of the second half camped in Southport’s territory.

They finally got their reward in the 81th minute, courtesy of Elliot Newby. A diagonal ball into the box by Ruben Curley was left to run by Garner. Newby collected the ball, skipped past his man and found the far corner to set up a grandstand finish.

But as the Shrimps pushed forward for a winner, Slew led an incisive breakaway that ended up with Dan Ogwuru tapping in just three minutes after Morecambe had got themselves level. The hosts held out to secure a much-needed win for themselves, and halt Morecambe’s winning streak.

Morecambe return to the Halo Aerospace on Saturday afternoon, with the visit of Brackley.
