More than 150 children from primary schools across Lancaster have been learning how to stay safe around reservoirs and rivers.

Year 6 pupils took part in the fun and informative Crucial Crew event in Lancaster.

“It is so important that young people are educated from an early age about how to stay safe around water," said Iain Pilling, United Utilities’ Area Engagement Lead for Lancashire.

"Although reservoirs are beautiful, they can be extremely dangerous and are not a place for swimming, even on the warmest day. We urge people of all ages to be aware of our safety messages.”

  • Deep water and steep sides make it difficult to get out, and hidden machinery can be a hazard
  • Remote locations mean it may be difficult for emergency services to help anyone in trouble
  • Strong currents can be caused by machinery under the water
  • Cold water shock can take your breath away and lead to panic, reservoir water can be extremely cold
