Lancaster shop to close as high street gaming chain faces administration

Game in Lancaster

A Lancaster high street gaming store has announced it will shut as the company stands on the brink of administration.

A closing down sale has been announced at GAME in the St Nicholas Arcades shopping centre.

Signs have gone up inside the shop to say the store will be closing in April and that all stock must go.

This comes after GAME Retail filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators through law firm RPC.

This gives the retailer a 10-day period of protection from creditor action as it decides what to do next.

It is not the first time GAME - which sells consoles, video games and toys - has been under threat.

GAME Group, who operated GAME, went into administration in 2012 with the loss of more than 2000 jobs and closure of 277 stores.

GAME was subsequently rescued by OpCapita, owners of COMET, the following week.

Frasers Group then acquired GAME in 2019.

Six GAME outlets were closed in August 2025 and there are now around 240 stores in the UK.

The unit at St Nicholas Arcades where Lancaster GAME is based has been on the market for lease for some time.

Frasers Group also own Sports Direct which opened in St Nicholas Arcades in December, with a GAME unit inside.

Many other Sports Direct stores, including one at the Sunnycliffe Retail Park on Mellishaw Lane in Lancaster, also house a GAME store or concession.

Beyond Radio has contacted GAME and Frasers Group for comment.
